Kochi Launches Design Competition for Streets for People Challenge

To promote walking friendly, economic friendly, child-friendly, safe and happy public spaces/streets for all in Kochi City, CSML has invited designs for the selected streets from the citizens as part of Streets for People Challenge. The Streets 4 people challenge is an initiative of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and Smart Cities Mission to inspire the people to create and promote walking-friendly streets and create flagship walking initiative in cities which focus on place-making, live ability and pedestrian friendly neighborhood.The main designs should have fair distribution of spaces, safety and security for all users, comfort, sensitivity to local surroundings, live ability and environmental stability, pedestrian friendly streets, activity area, shopping area, interaction spaces, kids play area etc.


CMSL has short-listed four major sites/streets with mixed use flagship and neighborhood to promote pedestrian-friendly spaces which are Vasco Square, P T Usha Road, Streets long the Eruveli and Kalvathy Canal, and Jew Town Road. The winning design will first be tested on the grounds. The winning entry will be implemented after modification based on site conditions and other approvals. The sites have been suggested by CSML but participants can propose any other similar site also within Kochi Corporation area .

Professionals and Students in the field of Architecture, Urban design, planning and other relevant fields and also Multi-disciplinary collaborations are eligible for participating in this competition. Entries will start from 21-12-2020 and the registration will close on 01-01-2021. Final submission will end on 10.01.2021 and winners will be announced on 17-01-2021. 1st, 2nd and 3rd award shall be 25000, 15000, 10000 respectively. For others a certificate for participation shall be given. The evaluation will be done by the experts. CSML is in collaboration with GIZ, a German Development Agency for the implementation of winning designs. CSML reserves the final right for all the decision.
